Rare Prairie Folly sighted in Seward County

Published May 22, 2024

Cecil B. Sturnum, part-time bird-watcher and full-time skeptic, has come to Seward County to discredit a report that the rare Prairie Folly has been sighted. “It’s a hoax,” Sturnum said grumpily. “The Prairie Folly hasn’t been seen in 150 years. The bird is extinct.”

Sturnum is staying at Liberty House B&B while in Seward. Pat, the owner of the B&B, says, “Well, he leaves the toilet seat up, I know that much.”

Sturnum rises early every morning and is out into the fields and tall grasses, binoculars in hand. “So far, I have not seen a single sign of the Folly. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. As expected, since it’s extinct.”

In spite of what Sturnum believes, Cheryl, at the Rivoli Theater, claims to have sighted the bird.

When asked for comment, Sturnum shook his head and told us told us, “People in small towns are prone to tall stories.”

Cecil Sturnum has been called the Grinch of the Bird World. If you want to prove the Mr. Sturnum wrong––if you think you can spot the rare and elusive Prairie Folly––join us this summer in Seward, Nebraska, for The Great Folly Hunt.
